Photo Shoot: RV Having Fun Yet?

Cruise America is the largest RV rental company in North America. Their marketing necessitates an approach that encourages families to get out and explore the continent and make their own adventure. After packing up the studio, we headed north to an undisclosed location for three days for a photo shoot. The autumn environment of aspen, cottonwood and sycamore trees scattered among the ponderosa pines created a tranquil and rustic backdrop. The outcome of the photo shoot was an inspiring collection of brand imagery to anchor a renewed advertising campaign we developed.

Bic Norwood Custom Promotional Calendar Designs

BIC NORWOOD

Today marks the day

BIC Norwood desired unique concepts for new high-end calendar designs. We relished the opportunity to test the limits of common systems and explore unusual print construction.

Read more The challenge was to attract a younger, more diverse audience by rejuvenating and modernizing typical monthly calendar designs. To differentiate the new products we worked with artists and photographers from around the world. Artists like South African illustrator, Robin Gombert, and others closer to home like Tucson-based illustrator Regina Lord. By using custom art we were able to make our designs more relevant and precise. BIC inspired us to flex our creative muscles and turn out some pretty amazing collateral.

Contemporary Calendars

Technology has spawned the rise of various digital applications that save dates, set reminders and seamlessly integrate with other digital platforms. Convenience is handy, but digital calendars lack a sense of personality and generally don’t elicit any special attention; they are purely functional.

Our goal was to alter the perception of traditional calendar designs to engage people with captivating art and non-traditional formats. Distinguished imagery brings to life a sense of culture from around the globe and throughout all demographics.

Cultural Exchange

Collect a new passport stamp with the passing of each month, well almost. Tasked with creating pieces for the Latin American market, we commissioned artists south of the border that would provide stunning works to complement the traditions of Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Off the Grid

When we were presented with the opportunity to take the traditional calendar out of its usual format and explore potential new frontiers, we were more than happy to oblige. Drawing inspiration from a few of everyone's favorite things – food and the weekend – these unexpected designs offer a tactile experience and playful details that customers crave.

Extraordinary construction, graphic enhancements and creative production methods drove the scope of work and execution of the print collateral. Whether at home or the office, these calendars are a distinct reminder that surely won't go unnoticed.

Note(worthy) Book Design

As you can probably imagine we go through a lot of notebooks around here, and because of this we’ve taken to binding our own. One day we got to thinking – why not create our own book design? Like any project we touch, we had to go all out, and made an entire series of Splinter notebooks. Using common “note” phrases, we created this environmentally friendly set that has everyone in the studio happily taking notes.

The American Advertising Federation (AAF) also took note of our book design project. Read more.

The whole series of notebooks are printed on recycled FSC certified paper that is made from responsible sources and is elemental chlorine free.

We do a lot of sketching. And even more taking notes. Why not enjoy it? Next time you’re in the studio, ask about them and you’ll likely leave with one or two of them.

Custom Design, Wine and Pine.

From time to time we have the itch to create something custom, from scratch, to keep our skills and spirits sharp. It’s a particularly nice break from the monitor. Making things with our hands is a nice itch to scratch at times, especially when it has a great end result – a custom design that’s a perfect hideaway for your wine.

Sanding and painting the custom design wine boxes

After several coats of custom-mixed, Splinter PMS matched paint, came the laquer. Lots of it. They turned out so great, our clients were asking for more. Hopefully that was the custom design boxed, not the cabernet.

Our clients and colleagues have become familiar with our team making custom things, so there’s always fun things kicking around our studio.

Ignite Phoenix – Creative Program and Event Design

Ignite Phoenix

SHARING OUR PASSION

Twice a year, Ignite Phoenix educates and exhilarates the Phoenix community. As the creative partner for 13 installments, we've had the privilege to design creative programs and event collateral that span a spectacular range of concepts. Each piece fits together to build excitement for the event while engaging the audience in the warmth of the idea-sharing environment.

Read more Ignite is an information exchange – fostering and inspiring Phoenix and global communities to share, experience, and enjoy different topics. From the creative and subjective, to cerebral, inspirational, technical, and philosophical. The work breathes life into an already energetic event showcasing the passions that spark interests in the Phoenix community.

Our friends at Ignite challenge us each time to develop a program that may initially be a simple idea, but undoubtedly grows into something larger. So when it’s time to brand these unique events, the resulting materials are an experience. From signage to apparel, even music packaging – bringing together different materials alongside different ideas is the goal so the entire evening speaks to those willing to be engaged.

Each installment has a different theme and is anchored by the design concept. The event materials must set the stage with intelligent design work that tickles the brain.

Meet Cute

Sweetly falling just a few days before Valentine's day, this one-night-only affair led to a charming collection of passions shared under one roof, making everyone's heart skip a beat.

The evening's program was gifted like a grade school-inspired, flirty love note sealed with a heart. Everyone in attendance also received the always coveted mix tape (or CD, as per technology) which housed a collection of feel-good jams curated from local artists.

Cuatro de Mayo

We couldn't resist the call to honor our fellow Phoenician Igniters in the most festive way possible when Ignite Phoenix 12 fell on cuatro de Mayo. An opportunity to flex some illustration skills combining fun with paper became a showpiece of decoration and celebration of culture.

The jubilation of color and playful illustrations showcasing the Phoenix, Arizona skyline adorned the program. This creative program was produced as its own papel picado so attendees could take pleasure in flipping them over and stringing them up to keep the festivities going the following day for Cinco.

Challenging Preconceptions

Ignite Phoenix 13 was themed on the oddities, fear, and folklore surrounding the number 13. Unlucky? Friday the 13th? Buildings lacking a 13th floor? This phenomena is noted in various cultures around the world bringing to life many bizarre superstitions. Making it the obvious design concept to explore, naturally.

We designed a newspaper publication that looked completely legitimate but filled it with suspicious and bizarre falsities that got people chatting. A perfect collaboration between the Ignite and Splinter teams, we reveled in conjuring up the weirdest and wildest ideas, resulting in a creative program that was impossible to ignore.

Horoscopes were created. A freak crossword puzzle was developed. We even spotted the Phoenician version of a Yetti, called the Sweati. True story. Filled with urban legends and clever infographics our efforts made this read hard not to believe.

And the Award Goes To…

Last year we had our work cut out for us with our rebrand project. For several months we poured ourselves into updating Splinter’s brand assets. It was a big undertaking but the rewards – or in this case, award – have made it all worth it!

Close up of Splinter collateral that won award

We entered the ADDY Awards for the self-promotion category with our freshly designed collateral package. The AAF is a national organization with a mission to better the advertising industry, recognize the best in advertising, and inform and educate advertising professionals. The 2014 Phoenix ADDY Award Gala was held downtown at The Duce – a very appropriate venue. If you haven’t been, we highly recommend visiting this place.

Drop Dead Gorgeous – Fashion Photoshoot

Halloween and the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos share ghoulish qualities, but the two are distinctly different. Unlike Halloween, Day of the Dead centers around celebrating the lives of those who have passed, and the belief that death is just a natural transition in life. Festivities include elaborate face paintings that resemble skulls and showing respect for their deceased loved ones. We were inspired to create a modern interpretation of the time-honored, colorful holiday through a fashion photoshoot. We wanted the look to be soft and ethereal; a multi-ethnic re-imagining of the traditional for audiences who haven’t had the opportunity to experience Mexican culture, but can identify with its message and relevancy in their own lives.

Working with Phoenix Fashion Week, we were able to cultivate a Vogue-inspired “Day of the Dead” fashion photoshoot with their team of talented wardrobe stylists, makeup artists and hair stylists. As November nears each year, Phoenix becomes glutted with decorations and costumes centered around the holiday. Corresponding celebrations and expressions often look eccentric, if not a bit startling, to the uninitiated.

Here’s a sneak peek of some behind the scenes shots.
